On June 2004, Mediacom, the 8th largest cable company in the United States, carried out a series of tests on the Plaintree’s WB5100 point to point wireless link to determine its reliability in adverse weather conditions. The test consisted of BER (Bit Error Rate) measurements using advanced telecommunications testing equipment over a fixed period of time. The tests would provide insight into how the link faired over time under heavy weather, including a number of hurricanes and fog.

The results showed that over a period of 64 days of testing, the WB5100 only experienced 18 seconds of downtime due to adverse weather conditions. This results in an availability of 99.9997% for the test period, well within the limit set by service providers, such as Mediacom, that require reliable technologies deployed within their networks to provide quality telecommunications service to their demanding customers.
